FabLittleBag’s Fight to Banish VAT from All Period Products

FabLittleBag’s Fight to Banish VAT from All Period Products

How green are your periods? Unlock 5% discount

At FabLittleBag, we believe that periods should never come with a price tag of inequality. Yet, in 2025, many period related products in the UK still include VAT—a tax that disproportionately impacts those who menstruate.

While some strides have been made to remove VAT on essential period products such as tampons and pads , and more recently period underwear, the fight is far from over. FabLittleBag is proud to stand at the forefront of this movement, advocating for a world where all period care items, including our own, are VAT-free.

Why Does VAT on Period Products Still Exist?

Let’s get straight to the point: VAT on period products is unfair. It’s a tax on a biological necessity, plain and simple. While the UK abolished VAT on tampons and pads in 2021 (thanks to the “Tampon Tax” campaign), other essential products like FabLittleBag are still subject to this tax. Why? Because the law doesn’t classify period disposal solutions as “absorbing or collecting”  menstrual blood, the definition that it cites as defining a period product “essential”—a classification we strongly disagree with.

Period Care Goes Beyond Tampons and Pads

The conversation around period care is broader than just menstrual products. It’s also about how we manage them. Disposal is a vital part of the period care cycle, especially for ensuring hygiene, confidence, and sustainability.

FabLittleBag isn’t just a convenience—it’s a necessity for anyone who wants a discreet, hygienic, and eco-responsible way to dispose of tampons and pads. Yet, despite our product supporting period care, environmental sustainability, and public health, it still carries a VAT charge. This is a policy we are actively challenging.

The Impact of VAT on Period Products

VAT on period products doesn’t just cost money—it sends a harmful message. It tells people who menstruate that their needs aren’t valued equally.

Did You Know?

  • VAT can increase the cost of period care items by up to 20%, creating a financial burden for individuals and households.
  • VAT on period products like FabLittleBags contributes to poor decision -making as corners are cut when disposing of used products; using cheap bad plastic dog-poo bags or flushing tampons and pads down the toilet for example.

FabLittleBag’s Stand Against VAT

As a brand committed to empowering women and championing sustainability, FabLittleBag is fighting for VAT-free status on all period care items, including disposal solutions. Here’s how we’re doing it:

  1. Raising Awareness:
We’re spreading the word about the unfair VAT policies still affecting period products, urging our community to join the conversation.
  2. Advocacy and Action:
We’re engaging with policymakers to highlight the essential role of period disposal solutions and advocating for their VAT-free inclusion.
  3. Expanding Accessibility:
Despite VAT, we’re committed to making FabLittleBag as accessible as possible by offering subscription services and partnerships with businesses to bring our products to more people.

How You Can Help

We know change doesn’t happen overnight, but together, we can make a difference. Here’s how you can join us in the fight to banish VAT from all period products:

  • Speak Up: Write to your local MP to advocate for VAT-free status on all period care items, including disposal solutions.
  • Support Period-Positive Brands: By choosing products like FabLittleBag, you’re supporting companies that are actively fighting for fairness.
  • Share the Message: Talk about the issue with friends, colleagues, and on social media. The more awareness we create, the louder our collective voice becomes.

Why Period Disposal Solutions Matter

Proper disposal isn’t just a convenience—it’s essential for:

  • Hygiene: Ensuring clean, stress-free period management.
  • Confidence: Offering discreet and secure solutions for public and shared spaces.
  • Sustainability: Preventing flushed products from polluting waterways and contributing to plastic waste.

Yet, despite these critical benefits, FabLittleBag and similar solutions remain classified as “non-essential.” We strongly believe that disposal is an integral part of period care and should be treated as such., even though it remains a taboo subject in 2025.

Looking Ahead: A Fairer Future for Period Care

While we continue to legally charge VAT on FabLittleBag, it’s a reality we’re determined to change. Our goal is simple: to ensure that no one is taxed for managing their periods, no matter the product.

Periods are a fact of life—not a luxury. By pushing for VAT-free status across all period products, we can create a future where period care is affordable, accessible, and fair for everyone.
